Sonmarg & Kargil Top Tips
Time is the biggest disclaimer
When you travel places, time becomes the biggest factor to manage. Some travelers never research the places beforehand and go with the flow while others have a list of “must-go” places which they can’t afford to miss. While travelling from Srinagar to Kargil, and taking a long and beautiful halt at Sonmarg, I paid heavily on missing Kargil memorial, which is 70 km ahead. After I was done blaming myself, nature took the blame on itself and a landslide had stuck the way. So the biggest advice would be to start early, so that you don’t end your day with regret.

Halts are necessary – If exploring Ladakh is your main plan and you are travelling from Srinagar to Ladakh, take a mandatory night stop at Kargil. One of the suggestions is Rangyul resort, with an average taste of meals. Also a must advice would be to book your breakfast and dinner at the resort itself as there are not many options nearby.

Halt at Zojila Pass – You might feel the biting cold and winds blowing at full length, but do not miss on taking a stop at Zojila Pass and getting yourself clicked.
Halt at Mulbekh Monastery – A monastery, which encompasses 9 meters tall statue of Buddha, a very peaceful retreat. This should be your first stop while going from Kargil to Ladakh, and it’s just 45 km from Kargil.
Notice road signs – As you go along, you would see unique road safety quotes beautifully placed. To name some “Feel the curves, don’t hug them”, “Safety at home is safe tea at home”, “Don’t learn safety by accident” and “Be Mr. late than Late Mr.”
Know the right network – While travelling from Srinagar to Kargil, your Vodafone or Airtel network would diminish as your network with nature would increment. Advise you to buy a BSNL SIM from nearby shops in Kargil as that’s the only best one to operate. For Jio users it would be the biggest disappointment, as neither Srinagar nor Ladakh supports this network.
Carry food plus water– A general advice while travelling from Srinagar to Kargil or further ahead in Ladakh, carry dry snacks/fruits and loads of water as when the altitude increases you would gradually acclimatize to an increasingly thin layer of air.
