Budapest Top Tips
Ignorance is not bliss
Budapest, started with a scary affair to me which later turned into a sweet venture. My scary affair was my stay at Caterina Apartments, which took all my nerves to drag my heavy suitcase through dark staircase. The apartment was well maintained with all the basic facilities, the one thing which nagged my mind was that private rooms and dorms were allocated separate space with dorms having no door security mechanism. On hearing some strange noises late evening, I repeatedly requested the caretaker to help me for the same, but all went in vain. As I dint have any locking mechanism for the inside room, I dragged the cupboard and chained it to the door. The night passed and moving on, I spend all my days very beautifully discovering the city.

Currency exchange- A must thing to do is avoid exchanging currencies near the airport, metro station or any such junctions. If you want to save your money loss exchange rate, use your travel card wherever possible and for cash, use your travel card to remove forint currencies.
Japanese Vibes in Budapest – One of my favorite place to visit in Budapest is Margaret Island, do take a walk along the garden and if you are lucky enough you would witness the orchids around. A place just to sit and relax for hours.
Walk the street – Take a walk, as long as possible to discover the quirky statutes, cars, shops, etc. It helps you understand more about Budapest culture and people around. Every building structure is unique and worth capturing. You will also find a Rolex office lit up brightly at Octogon square.
Night view – Stay till late afternoon at the Chain and Margaret bridge, and enjoy the lit up view. Trying the Thai food nearby, was savoury.

Explore locals- To take a tour of Buda castle, St. Stephen’s Basilica and others, take a local bus tour ticket which drops in after every half an hour. Also, enjoy a night at the ruin pub, made out of derelict buildings and unused spaces.

Food – Do try gelato ice cream at an ice cream stall in front of Oktogon Bistro or any other place near your hostel/hotel. Also try Turkish dishes esp. gullac, a sweet dish made of milk and pastry. Langos is a must try at a shop, right opposite Budapest Szechenyi thermal bath. For people who do not know what Langos is; it’s a Hungarian specialty i.e. a deep fried dough added with toppings. In Indian terms, it is an enlarged and different version of Batura with westernized topping.
